Tree roots in pipes: why clearing them never ends it

If your main line blocks around the same time each year, you almost certainly have roots. Clearing them is maintenance, not a repair — and knowing the difference is what stops the annual bill.

Root intrusion is the most common serious drainage problem in older Australian suburbs, and the reason is the pipe material. Houses built with vitrified clay or earthenware drainage have pipes joined in short lengths, and those joints move with the ground.

How a root gets into a sealed pipe

It does not break in. It finds a way that is already there.

A sewer line carries warm, moist, nutrient-rich air. Where a joint has opened slightly, or a hairline crack has formed, that air escapes into the surrounding soil — and a root growing nearby follows the gradient straight to it. Once a fine root tip is through the gap, it is inside the best growing environment available anywhere on the property, and it thickens.

Two consequences follow. The root mass catches everything. Paper, fat and solids snag on it and build a dam. And the root thickens in the gap, which widens the crack it came through and makes the next intrusion easier.

Why it is seasonal

Root growth is seasonal, and so is demand for water. Blockages cluster when the tree is growing hardest and when the soil is driest — which is why people describe it as "every spring" or "every summer". If your blockages have a rhythm, that rhythm is a diagnosis.

Why clearing is not a repair

Mechanical clearing — a cutter on a cable, or high-pressure jetting — removes the mass that is in the pipe now. It does not close the gap the root came through, and it does not remove the root outside the pipe. The root regrows toward the same opening, because nothing about the conditions has changed.

This is not a criticism of clearing. Clearing is the right immediate response to a blocked line. The mistake is treating it as the end of the matter and then being surprised each year.

What the camera is actually for

A drain camera clears nothing. What it does is answer the only question that changes your decision: is this a root intrusion at a joint, or is the pipe broken?

Those lead different places. A single intrusion at one joint in otherwise sound pipe is a candidate for a targeted repair. A line with multiple intrusions, a displaced section, or a length that has dropped and now holds water is a structural problem, and clearing it repeatedly is throwing money at a pipe that has failed.

Ask for the footage or the report, not a verbal summary. Ask where the intrusion is, measured from the inspection point, and whether the pipe around it is intact.

What relining does differently

Pipe relining installs a resin-saturated liner inside the existing pipe and cures it in place, forming a continuous pipe within a pipe. The point is that it is jointless across the relined section: there is no gap at the old joint for a root to find, and the escaping moisture that attracted the root is sealed in.

It is done without excavating the whole run, which is why it displaced dig-and-replace as the default for a lot of residential work. It is not universal — a pipe that has collapsed or lost too much shape may need excavation and replacement, and that is a judgement made from the camera footage.

What you can do about the tree

Usually less than you would like. Removing the tree does not remove the crack, and in many councils street trees and significant trees on private land are protected — removal or major pruning can require council approval. Root barriers can help where a specific tree and a specific run are the known problem, but they are a preventive measure for pipework that is still sound.

The honest hierarchy is: fix the pipe so there is nothing to find, rather than fight the tree.

Chemical root killers deserve caution. Products that foam a herbicide into the line are sold as a maintenance treatment, but they do not repair the pipe, they do not remove an established mass, and what goes into a sewer ends up at a treatment plant. If you use one, follow the label exactly, never mix it with anything else, and treat it as a delaying tactic rather than a fix.

Whose pipe is it?

Broadly, the drainage on your property up to the boundary is yours; the sewer main in the street belongs to the water authority.
