Is rainwater tank water safe to drink?
There is no answer to this question that applies to every tank. There is an answer for your tank, and it comes from a laboratory, not from a website.
Plenty of Australian households drink rainwater and have done for generations. That is not the same as "tank water is safe", and it is not the same as "tank water is dangerous". Both of those are claims about a general case that does not exist.
Your tank collects from your roof, in your area, with your gutters, screens and maintenance history. Those are the variables, and they are all local.
What actually gets into a tank
From the roof and the air
Bird and possum droppings are the main microbiological input, which is why a screened inlet, gutter mesh and a working first flush diverter do most of the practical work. Dust, pollen and leaf litter come with them.
From the roofing and plumbing materials
What the water touches matters. Older roofs may have lead flashing or lead-based paint; some older or unsuitable plumbing components can leach metals. This is a genuine concern and it is chemical rather than microbiological, which means boiling does nothing about it.
From the surroundings
Proximity to busy roads, industry, agricultural spraying or a wood heater flue changes what settles on a roof. Bushfire ash and firefighting activity change it sharply and suddenly.
From inside the tank
Sludge accumulates on the floor over years. Light reaching the water grows algae. A gap in a screen lets mosquitoes breed, and a dead animal in a tank is the scenario every guideline is written around.
What a test actually looks at
A meaningful test is done by a NATA-accredited laboratory — accreditation is what makes the result defensible rather than indicative. Broadly it covers:
- Microbiological indicators, principally E. coli, which signals faecal contamination.
- Metals such as lead, copper and zinc, relevant to roofing and plumbing materials.
- Physical and chemical characteristics: pH, turbidity, hardness, dissolved solids.
Two things about timing. A single test is a snapshot — it describes the tank on the day it was sampled, and a tank changes with season, rainfall and events. And how you take the sample matters: the lab will give you sterile containers and instructions, and a sample taken carelessly tests your hands rather than your water.
When to stop drinking it without waiting for a test
- After a bushfire, or if ash or retardant has fallen on the roof.
- If a dead animal is found in the tank or gutters.
- If the water changes — smell, colour, taste, or visible particles.
- After flooding that may have reached the tank.
- If someone in the house has an unexplained gastrointestinal illness.
In those situations, use an alternative supply and get advice from your state or territory health department.
Treatment: what each thing does and does not do
- Boiling deals with microbiological risk. It does nothing about metals or chemicals — in fact it concentrates them slightly.
- Sediment filtration removes particles and protects everything downstream. It is not disinfection.
- Activated carbon targets taste, odour and some organics. Not a disinfectant.
- UV disinfection inactivates microorganisms but removes nothing physical, and it only works on water that is already clear — turbidity shields organisms from the light.
- Reverse osmosis removes dissolved solids including metals, wastes some water, and needs maintenance to keep working.
A filter you never change stops being a filter and becomes a place where things grow. Maintenance is not a footnote here; it is the whole thing.
The maintenance that matters most
Keep gutters clear and meshed. Keep the tank sealed and light-proof with intact screens. Empty and maintain the first flush diverter. Keep overhanging branches trimmed back so animals are not sitting above the catchment. Have the tank inspected for sludge periodically, and desludged when it needs it.
